Job description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Responsible for providing administrative and clerical support work, which involves providing Maintenance Foremen with pertinent information on equipment status, serviceability, revenue vehicle changes, road calls, inspection schedules, and types of vehicle history reports.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Types vehicle history, creates work orders, maintains vehicle status boards, reads the bus yard for determining bus status, prepares daily servicing requirements, answers telephones, and assists all Garage and Yard Foremen. Checks in vehicles returning to the yard from passenger service to determine vehicle availability. Responsible for answering, screening, and routing incoming calls. Takes accurate messages. Answers routine inquiries. This non-skilled hourly paid maintenance employee job description excludes marginal functions that are incidental to performing the job. Other duties may exist.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must have completed high school or equivalent plus at least one year of business school or college and have at least two years related experience in a shop environment or an equivalent combination. Must read and write English effectively. Must have the training and experience which provides the required knowledge.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have adequate typing speed and accuracy. Effective interpersonal skills both in person and by telephone. Effective oral and written communication skills. Must operate usual office equipment. Must work alone. Must have mathematical skills to perform basic calculations. Must maintain and prepare records. Must follow oral and written instructions. Must acquire knowledge of job and occupational hazards and safety precautions required in the shops. Reports vehicle defects and records servicing requirements and other preventive maintenance data. Must safely operate and drive VIA’s cars, trucks, tugs, and forklifts. Must safely work in an environment where continuous attention must be given to determine safe distance from operating vehicles. Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license. Must perform job assignments while wearing mandatory safety equipment such as respirators, safety glasses/goggles/face-shields, gloves, and back protection belts. Must perform and satisfactorily complete vehicle service attendant and tire changer training upon completion of probationary period. Must maintain good work attendance. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must occasionally crawl, and be on unprotected heights, and perform fine manipulation. Must continuously sit, kneel, bend, stoop, twist, squat, reach, climb up and down stairs, walk, stand, , be around moving machinery; work in environments of extremes in temperature/humidity, with constant exposure to dust, fumes, gases, noise, and welding arc flash (mandatory safety equipment must be utilized when exposed to hazardous conditions.) Must occasionally lift/carry 50lbss., push/pull 50lbs lbs. frequently lift/carry 35 lbs., push/pull 35 lbs. continuously lift/carry 25 lbs., push/pull 25lbs. Must occasionally perform repetitive motions throughout the work day which involve continuous body movement, force exertion and balancing such as: typing, lifting boxes of paper, lifting, twisting, pushing, and pulling farebox vaults. Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
